Tom Hogson tells...

COLCHESTER'S ROMAN HISTORY

Essex, like anything else, had to begin somewhere and Colchester is the place. Colchester is Britain’s first recorded town situated less than 30 miles from the county town, Chelmsford.

When Colchester was first founded in 1095 it was the capital city of England. It held a great level of prestige amongst royalty and compared to Maldon was the largest of Essex’s two towns. Now-a-days London is the capital of England due to is location and size- but Colchester is still a hugely significant place.

In 1076 the Normans built Colchester Castle, which still stands to this day. The castle is now home to a museum on Colchester’s history which holds various Roman artifacts. Tom Hogson is the Colchester Museum Manager and an expert on the towns history.

See the video above to hear Tom Hogson telling the exciting story of how Colchester evolved from one of the most important towns in Britain to the historic city it is today.
